It's also easy to reach. Direct flights from most major US cities land at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), about 30 to 45 minutes from the beaches of Cabo San Lucas. You can fly in, marry into a sunset, and still have days left to actually enjoy your honeymoon.
Legal vs. symbolic: how marriage paperwork works in Mexico
Here's the question nobody asks early enough. You have two honest options, and both are completely valid.
A legal marriage in Mexico is real and recognized, but it takes planning: you generally need to arrive several days before the ceremony, provide documents (often birth certificates and IDs), complete local medical tests within a set window, and have witnesses. A good local coordinator handles all of it so you don't have to decode Spanish paperwork on your vacation. For the official process, the Baja California Sur civil registry falls under the Mexican government's gob.mx system.
A symbolic ceremony is what many international couples actually choose: they sign the legal papers quietly at a courthouse back home, then hold their "real" ceremony in Cabo with zero paperwork stress. It looks, feels, and photographs exactly like a wedding, because it is one. Nobody watching would ever know the difference.
Neither path is more romantic than the other. Pick the one that removes the most stress, and spend that saved energy on the day itself.

Médano Beach and quiet coves
Médano is the calm, swimmable beach close to town. Early in the morning you can find soft, empty stretches that feel private even in the middle of everything.
The desert and cactus fields
Genuinely underrated. The Baja desert at golden hour is otherworldly, and it gives you images no beach elopement can.

The best time of year to elope in Cabo
October through May is the sweet spot: warm days, cool evenings, and that soft, forgiving light photographers dream about. Summer (June to September) is hotter and more humid, but it's also quieter, greener, and often more flexible. And here's the quiet luxury of eloping: you're not fighting for a peak-season Saturday. How to plan your Cabo elopement (a simple timeline)
Elopements are simpler than weddings, but a little structure still helps:
6 months out: decide legal vs. symbolic, choose your general location and season, and book the two things that book up first — your photographer and, if you want one, a coordinator.
3 months out: lock in details you care about: florals, hair and makeup, a private dinner, any permits for spots like the beach or the arch. A local coordinator makes this effortless.
1 month out: confirm the timeline, sunrise or sunset times, and a simple weather backup. Then stop planning and start looking forward to it.

Make it a trip: what to do after you say "I do"
The best part of eloping is that the wedding doesn't eat the whole vacation. After your ceremony, Cabo is yours: a boat out to El Arco, whale watching from December to April, a slow afternoon in the artist town of Todos Santos, or simply a long dinner with your feet in the sand. Many couples add a relaxed session on another day of the trip, so they come home with both the ceremony and the honeymoon on film.
