There is a stretch of coastline just outside Cabo San Lucas where the desert meets the Pacific, the rocks rise in huge sculpted slabs, and the Arch sits small and gold on the horizon. It is called Playa Monumentos — Monuments Beach — and it has quietly become one of my favorite places to photograph couples in Cabo. I'm Ana Badillo, a local engagement and wedding photographer, and this is my honest guide to shooting (or booking) engagement photos at Playa Monumentos.
The short version: Monuments Beach is a rugged, surf-swept stretch of sand on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, a few minutes from the marina near the Sunset Monalisa restaurant. Come at golden hour, work the rock formations and the view back toward El Arco, and you get dramatic, editorial photos with almost no crowd. It is not a swimming beach — but for pictures, that is exactly the point.
Why Playa Monumentos works so well for engagement photos
Most couples come to Cabo imagining a soft, sandy beach. Monuments Beach gives you something better: texture. The shoreline is made of big granite boulders and long, layered rock shelves that catch the light like a natural set. Behind you, the open Pacific rolls in; to the east, the famous El Arco and Land's End rise out of the sea. That combination — warm stone, wild water, and Cabo's most iconic landmark on the horizon — is hard to find anywhere else on the peninsula.
Because it sits just outside the busy tourist core, it is usually far quieter than Medano or the town beaches. Fewer people means cleaner frames, more freedom to move, and a session that feels private rather than performed.
The best light at Monuments Beach
The light does most of the work here. Golden hour — the last sixty to ninety minutes before sunset — is when the rocks glow amber, the water turns to brushed gold, and the Arch catches the last of the sun. That warm, low light also softens skin and hides the harsh shadows that midday creates on pale sand.
If you want the beach entirely to yourselves, sunrise is the quiet alternative: soft, cool light, flat water, and often not another person in sight. Midday is the one time I would avoid, unless we are deliberately chasing bold, high-contrast editorial shadows. How to get to Playa Monumentos
Monuments Beach is in the southern part of Los Cabos, on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas. The easiest route is to follow the Transpeninsular Highway toward town and stop near the Sunset Monalisa restaurant, where a small parking area leads to a short walk down to the beach. It is only a few minutes from the marina and the Pedregal, so it pairs easily with other locations on the same session. What to expect from a session at Monuments Beach
We treat the beach like a series of little scenes rather than one spot. The session usually flows like this:
1. The walk-in. We start loose — walking the shoreline, hand in hand, while you settle into being photographed. No pressure, no stiff poses, just movement.
2. The rock formations. The sculpted boulders are the signature of this beach. We use them as frames, seats, and backdrops, and the layered light across the stone does the rest.
3. The open sand. For wide, airy shots we move onto the open beach, where the Pacific fills the frame behind you and the Arch glows in the distance.
4. The last light. As the sun drops, we finish with intimate, backlit portraits — the ones that usually end up framed on a wall.
Playa Monumentos for proposals, too
The rock formations and the sunset make Monuments Beach one of the most cinematic places in Cabo to pop the question. We plan the exact spot and the exact minute in advance, I stay discreet and dressed like a guest, and the second you kneel, I am already shooting. Good to know before you book
It is a surf beach, not a swim. The waves here are powerful and the currents strong, so we shoot along the sand and the rocks and keep well clear of the water. That also means gorgeous, active water in the background.
Bring flat shoes. The approach and the rocks are uneven. Most couples shoot barefoot or in sandals and change into nicer shoes for the sand.
Plan around the tide. The best rock shelves appear at lower tide. When you book, I check the tide tables and the sunset time and build the session around them.
