You only ask once. And it happens in seconds. My whole job is to make sure that when you look back, you can see it — the exact moment you went down on one knee, the look on their face, the yes you'll never forget.
I'm Ana Badillo, a proposal and engagement photographer based in Cabo San Lucas. I photograph surprise proposals at El Arco, on the beach at golden hour, on a private yacht, and everywhere in between across Los Cabos. You plan the question; I make sure it's captured beautifully and discreetly.
Why propose in Cabo San Lucas
Few places on earth were made for the question like Cabo. The Arch rises out of the sea at the very tip of Baja, the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, and golden hour turns the whole coastline warm. Whether you want a dramatic cliff, an empty beach, or the bow of a boat, Cabo gives you a backdrop you'll never have to explain.
And because I live here, I know where the crowds are and where they aren't, when each spot catches the best light, and how to time everything so the sun is exactly where we want it when you kneel.
Where to propose in Cabo San Lucas
El Arco and Land's End. The classic. By boat, with the arch and the two seas as your backdrop.
The beach at golden hour. Quiet stretches of sand where the light does half the work — romantic, simple, and timeless.
A private yacht or sunset cruise. Champagne, the open water, and a proposal with no one else in sight.
San José del Cabo and the desert. Colonial streets, cactus fields, and a softer light for couples who want something different.
How a surprise proposal works
This is the part people worry about, and it is genuinely the easy part. Before the day, we agree on the location, the exact time, and a simple signal — a hand on a railing, a spot you walk to — so I know the moment is coming. On the day I arrive early and stay to the side, dressed like a guest, photographing the view. Your partner sees someone taking pictures of the scenery, nothing more. The second you go down on one knee, I am already shooting.
"A proposal happens once, and it goes by fast. My whole job is to make sure you get to keep every second of it."
After the yes: your engagement session
The best part of a proposal session is what happens next. Once the surprise is over, we use the moment for a relaxed engagement session right there — the two of you, the light, and the adrenaline. You go home with the real, unrepeatable moment and gorgeous portraits of your first hour engaged. Many couples also plan a fuller session another day. You can see where those work best in my guide to the best places for engagement photos in Cabo San Lucas.
